Applications 
While pin pointing faults in underground cables, a surge generator in the timing mode is made to dissipate high voltage energy surges into the cable. The resultant breakdown gives rise to magnetic signals throughout the route of cable and acoustic signals around the point of fault. 
The pinpointing activity can be accomplished by means of ground microphone, headphone and a receiver. 
Exact knowledge of the cable route can reduce the fault location time considerably. 
Surge wave receiver SLE-90 facilitates the use to pin point the fault and simultaneously know the cable route without using any other methods such as audio frequency system.
The instruments acoustic channel opens for approx. 200m sec. on receipt of magnetic pulse. This will minimise the effect of external acoustic interference. While pinpointing the fault with surge generator and receiver set it is necessary that the operator should be on the route of the cable because any deviations can mislead the operator.
The magnetic signal available on the cable will guide the operator to be on the route, while the acoustic signal will be heard near the fault only. The levels of both the channels on the bar graph indicator give the exact pinpoint location of the cable fault.
Gains of both channels can be independently controlled through respectively marked “Volume” control. Sensitivity of display also can be independently controlled through respectively marked “Sensitivity” control.
