LOW VOLTAGE SURGE TESTER  Model SWT-4

Features Low Voltage Surge Tester
  • Suitable for LT cables & lighting cables
  • Can pinpoint faults with acoustic receiver
  • Rugged and can be carried to field
The need for a low voltage surge wave testing instrument arises as the high voltage units deliver extremely low energy at low voltage. The amount of energy delivered by a surge wave tester follows the formula 1/2 CV2. A unit delivering 500 Joules of energy at 8kV will deliver less than 100 Joules at 2kV. This energy will be insufficient to allow any pinpointing activity even by very powerful amplifiers and seismic pick ups. Hence a separate surge testing unit delivering more than 250 Joules at low voltage is called for.
The SWT-4 is specifically designed to work on low voltage cables. This unit has all the facilities as is available with high voltage unit viz. built in current coupler for working with a transient recorder and can pre-locate a cable fault.
The ranges 2kV & 4kV are adequate for causing a surge breakdown on LT cables up to 1.1kV/ 2.2kV grade.

Safety
The unit incorporates all the safety features commonly available with any high voltage unit viz. inter-locks to ensure that instrument can be switched on only if variac control is kept at zero position, the special cable supplied has been connected to the output socket, high voltage switch is properly selected and pressed. An automatic soft discharge of capacitor/cable under test, takes place through a low resistance path and internal sphere, when the unit is switched off or circuit trips. This ensures completely safe working conditions.
